I am Ali, an embodied flow teacher and mover whose passion is to help people find a sense of liberation through free movement and creativity in the moment. I am a passionate freestyle dancer and embodiment enthusiast with a BA Hons in fine art. Originally from Scotland I have travelled and attended embodiment immersions and festivals around the world extensively, collecting tools and carving life. My current creativity lies in inspiring people to drop into their bodies and to be able to move from within. Being able to isolate body parts and focus our attention there not only heightens our awareness but creates presence and stillness. And through this we can find our inner power and a sense of freedom.
I have a personal practise in classical tantra, yoga, dance, including contact improv, moving in and with nature and meditation. I regularly attend Contact Improv Retreats and movement immersions. In April 2018 I opened a creative embodiment centre in Tauranga to be a hub for community and growth with a focus on wellbeing, embodiment and creativity.
I have been running embodied Contact Improv workshops since Jan 2018 at festivals in NZ and at my studio in Tauranga.
Since completing my embodied flow teacher training in July 2019 I have been developing a series of immersive moving meditations. A gentle guided movement practise designed to help you drop deep into the layers of your body to trust your intuitive wisdom in how to move. This experience is creative, non-confronting and results in a deeper connection with your body, creating space from the mind. As a regular practise mindful movement will become muscle memory in your body allowing you to find more joy and curiosity in your everyday movements, giving you a stronger awareness of yourself in your environment.
Workshops Offerings Introduction to Contact Improv. Contact Improv is a beautiful dance form that involves weight sharing, a rolling point of contact, lifting, body awareness and connection. There are no set moves, each dance is different and unique to the individual players. It is likened to a form of language and in order to understand each other we must listen through our bodies.
This workshop will introduce you to the basics of Contact Improv and will give you tools to confidently connect outside a workshop environment, in and out of the dance. You will reclaim your capacity to move naturally with flow and freedom building a connection with yourself, others and surroundings.
Expect to drop in to your own body before calling on your inner creativity to feed into your movement. Engaging the child in you to play with curiosity. I’ll ask you to reframe your ideas of movement allowing your body’s greater physical knowing to take over.
Come with an openness to learn, move and connect. To dance, to feel, to move, to love, to be. Freedom is in the knowing of your body.
Contact Improv 6 week intro course
The real beauty starts in the dance when we take time to listen deeply and so in this series we will be beginning slowly and exploring our own embodiment as we connect to others. Each week we will discover a new element of the dance which will build from the last.
What we’ll cover:
+ How to communicate in the dance and boundary setting + Rolling techniques + Yielding through space + Moving in and out of the floor + Leading and following + Co-creating the dance + Lifting with structure over strength
What you will gain:
+ Confidence in moving through space on your own and with a partner + Confidence to join open CI jams + Confidence with your boundaries + A sense of connection through the CI community + Increased awareness of your felt sense + Greater mobility
Meditation is becoming evermore popular as people are discovering the space and stillness that it creates, the slowing down that we all know we need but can’t quite attain. Don’t we all crave that? But first we have to be able to sit still in one place and clear our minds, right?
A common misconception. There are many ways to find that stillness and access the spaciousness within.
This immersive experience is completely guided to a deep journeying playlist. You will be verbally guided into your body via somatic movement, breath awareness, and creative imagery. This combination requires nothing from the thinking mind which creates space for the body to move how it needs to in the moment. It is an hour out of time to give back to yourself, to reconnect with the vehicle that does so much for us on a daily basis, to find ease and bliss within your moving body.
There are no set moves or choreography, no performance, no expectations, a simple curiosity and openness to move more freely.
'Ali's magical voice, intuitive guidance and ability to create a safe space to let go in, took me on a journey within that was centered on the body, yet guided the mind into itself at the same time...I highly recommend you experience this for yourself, you won't regret it! A smooth, easy, flowing meditation, while moving the body...brilliant.' Paul Mattocks
