I am a passionate freestyle dancer and embodiment enthusiast with a BA Hons in fine art. Originally from Scotland I have travelled and attended festivals around the world extensively, collecting tools and carving life. My current creativity lies in inspiring people to drop into their bodies and to be able to move from within. Being able to isolate body parts and focus our attention there not only heightens our awareness but creates presence and stillness. And through this we can find our inner power and a sense of freedom. When we can find this presence with another we find a strong sense of connection. A communication beyond words.
I have a personal practise in yoga, dance, including contact improv, moving in and with nature and meditation. I have recently attended and been inspired by the NZ Contact Improv Retreat in 2018/19, Acic 2018 (Australian Contact Improv Convergence), Simon Thakur’s Ancestral movement retreat, Australia, 2018. In April 2018 I opened a creative embodiment centre in Tauranga to be a hub for community and growth with a focus on wellbeing, embodiment and creativity.
I have been running embodied Contact Improv workshops since Jan 2018 at festivals in NZ and at my studio in Tauranga.
Contact Improv is a beautiful dance form that involves weight sharing, a rolling point of contact, lifting, body awareness and connection. There are no set moves, each dance is different and unique to the individual players. It is likened to a form of language and in order to understand each other we must listen through our bodies.
This workshop will introduce you to the basics of Contact Improv and will give you tools to confidently connect outside a workshop environment, in and out of the dance. You will reclaim your capacity to move naturally with flow and freedom building a connection with yourself, others and surroundings.
Expect to drop in to your own body before calling on your inner creativity to feed into your movement. Engaging the child in you to play with curiosity. I’ll ask you to reframe your ideas of movement allowing your body’s greater physical knowing to take over.
Come with an openness to learn, move and connect. To dance, to feel, to move, to love, to be. Freedom is in the knowing of your body.
